The Tomato Head-Market Square

The Tomato Head began as the Flying Tomato in August of 1990. Originally slated to be a french bistro, the legacy of a pizza oven from the former tenants changed the tone of the restaurant. Enlisting the help of several experienced friends, Mahasti Vafaie, owner and driving creative force, crafted a menu that relied on the freshest vegetables, produce, and herbs. Along the way, she and her original staff of four discovered that the adage if you want something done right, do it yourself holds true and decided that whenever possible they would be responsible for every detail of the dining experience.

Thus began a standing tradition of daily preparation of breads, dressings, cookies and desserts that marks the quality of the Tomato Head food. What began as a five-day lunch spot serving on paper plates with plastic forks has blossomed into a six-evening/seven day success. With food as the focus, the Tomato Head has also served as a venue to musical acts, poetry readings, performance art, and monthly shows that highlight local artists efforts.

Additionally, the restaurant serves as host to wedding proposals and parties, celebrations of births and graduations, and various other functions of business and pleasure. The Tomato Head stands as a testament to an uncompromising commitment to great food. Backed by a talented and dedicated staff that now numbers forty, Mahasti continues to improve upon the original concept of a creative and innovative eatery that strives to stimulate your appetite and your mind.
