Comoros

The Comoros are a small island group near Eastern Africa. It has a diverse culture and history, and inhabitants speak French, Comorian, and Arabic. It is the only country which is a member of the African Union, Francophonie, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Arab League, and the Indian Ocean Commission. Unfortunately, social upheaval and poverty is the norm here. Agriculture is the economy’s leading light, and high amounts of vanilla and ylang ylang are produced here.

Mt. Karthala has rainforests and offers excellent trekking and hiking, but watch out, it’s an active volcano! You can also get in touch with your inner self a little while engaging in quiet, slow pursuits like drinking tea or strolling around the Arab Quarter in Moroni. Arab culture dominates, and you may be glad if you get to eat rice steamed with cloves, saffron, cinnamon, and pomegranate juice. Lentil soups, pickle relish, pineapples, citrus fruits, corn, tomatoes, and chiles are common foods. Seafood dishes like langoustine with vanilla sauce are a bit special.
