ORGANIC RESTAURANTS IN:

Greece

Greece is a populous Southeastern European country whose mythological stories and recent financial woes are equally famous. There is much natural beauty and excellent food. The slow pace of life can be charming, but may require a little patience. When in Athens, go to the Acropolis and the National Archaeological Museum, one of the best in the world. If you head North, Meteora has extraordinary Byzantine-era monasteries. Renting a scooter is an excellent way to zip around Aegean islands, viewing ruins and small communities, or taking in sunny beaches.

Greek food is varied, and simple yet impressive. Lamb, chicken, and fish are all consumed, yogurt and cheese appear in many dishes, and wheat can be made into pita bread, orzo pasta, or filo pastry. Common vegetables include eggplant, zucchini, and tomatoes. Greeks make fine olive oil, which tends to have a pretty strong flavor. Try skordalia, a garlic and potato puree, often served with deep fried cod. You can find vegan-friendly Greek, Mediterranean, Italian, or Mexican restaurants, juice bars, vegetarian Cretan or organic Greek food, and some macrobiotic and raw options. Athens has the most natural foods stores, which may help the locals detox from pollution in their environment.
