Germany

Germany is one of the largest countries in Europe, and its proud traditions include sausages called wurst and heaping glasses of beer. These days, however, German culture and cuisine is really diversifying. Outdoor markets, eco food coops with local fare, gluten-free options and inexpensive “bio-label” products at stores like Aldi are all pretty abundant. An increasing proportion of the under-30 population chooses organic food regularly to obsessively, and 63% of the overall population says they trust organic food more than conventional products. Given the German national character, it’s no great surprise that consumers and producers alike are very quality-conscious.

There are currently nine restaurants in the country with Michelin’s highest rating of three stars, so Germany’s food culture is catching up with France. Alongside pork, game and poultry dishes, menus are likely to include freshwater fish, many types of soups, varied vegetable dishes (including cabbage of course), and desserts featuring fresh ingredients like apples, cherries, and plums or quark cheese. You can even find organic Gummi bears in today’s Deutschland.
